Robert & Cindy

You know how there are people you meet in your life and you know it was God deliberately giving you a gift; like, giving you someone you really needed in your life, someone who gets you, who you can talk to without censoring and know you’re always loved and accepted? Cindy is one of those people to me. It’s funny but our lives, not the actual situations but circumstances have, in a very odd, similar but different way, paralleled each other over the last few years. We both somewhat unexpectedly found ourselves single moms (her with older children, me with younger children) with relatively new businesses and all the challenges, sorrows, joys and triumphs that follow both. She recalls late night phone conversations that pulled her through a hard time and I recall the sanctuary of her home and kids and her readily available voice over the phone for whatever, whenever (even when she’s sleeping - the girl sleeps with the phone by her head I think. Am I the only one who leaves my cell phone in my purse downstairs at night? Talked to someone just last week who sleeps with their phone too - I think this is so funny).

So, needless to say, to be along for the ride when she fell in love with Robert has been a pretty awesome experience - one of those I’m so unbelievably happy for you that your happiness is my happiness experiences. And even better was meeting and loving him and thinking he is genuinely one of the nicest, considerate, down-to-earth and coolest musicians I’ve met. And even better than better was being in the room when he proposed to her. And better than better than better was doing their engagement shoot.

Now, Cindy knows how to do romance. Her couples pictures are hot - as in love hot, beautiful, sensual and sweet. I wanted to capture that for her so I encouraged lots of kissing and cuddling but I really didn’t need to - I’d say one word and she knew exactly what i meant and moved into position and bam! There was the picture (and I think even if I didn’t ask them to kiss and cuddle there would have been lots of kissing and cuddling. I sort of felt like we were all teenagers again with all the giggling and kisses.  pretty freaking cute. :)) That’s one very cool aspect of photographing another photographer, especially one you know well - they get what you want without you needing explain or demonstrate what you want. The other is being able to collaborate with them while you’re shooting. I was a bit bummed though - the weather did NOT play along with us that day and what I wanted to be a long, sweet engagement session turned into a very quick engagement session shut out by dark clouds, very dim light and cold, cold, cold! BUT it was fun regardless. All I have to say to the weather though is - you better play along nicer on the day of their wedding or else we’re going to have words!

okay, I can tell you exactly what’s happening here by the tell-tale look on Cindy’s face - she is saying “oh, raObert” in this soft, lyrical up and down way she has of saying it that sounds more like a ring tone than an actual statement. In fact, I told Robert he should record her saying that and make it his ring tone. It’s adorable.

this is a boarded up waffling house where they shared their first kiss. so sweet!

This one i edited more for fun than anything - this was one of Cindy’s favorites that she edited beautifully. I always think it’s interesting to see how two photographers will edit the same image. It just goes to prove that editing is as much a part of the artistic process as taking the actual image.

Change. Love. Surrender.

There are some sessions I edit that have such a story to them I find myself reminiscing through the entire editing process.  This is definitely one of those sessions. First, let me begin by saying this is Maggie Smith, talent extraordinaire. And gorgeous to boot. (God, do you think it’s really fair to bless some people with insane talent and stunning looks and great personalities and big hearts?  Something to think about the next time around. Ya might want to share the wealth with us other little people. I’m just saying….) She is also the daughter to one my bestestis is the world, Ms. Cindy who is also stunning and loaded with talent (Cindy Harter Photography). SO. It’s fair to say Maggie’s been photographed a lot and not just by any photographer but a really good photographer and I’ve seen the images and they’re beautiful. I’ve wanted to photograph her for some time now but when it came right down to it - I was a little nervous. I mean, she’s been photographed by an amazing photographer and not just once but a lot. She’s learned a style of posing, of communicating and she knows what she likes. I didn’t know any of these things about her. I couldn’t help wondering if I’d come up short - if my style of communicating and directing would be totally lame compared to her moms. And what if I got so out of my element I jammed up completely and stood there creatively clueless like a zomniac? What if, what, what if…silly probably considering how sweet and loving both Maggie and Cindy are but nevertheless, this is what was going through my head.
I should have known better. Maggie is so much fun that immediately our shoot took on a story that still has me cracking up. So, we decided the location of our shoot - this abandoned (or not? I love Cindy’s mentality - shoot first, ask later. cool. I’m down with it) warehouse - was a wharf and she was saying goodbye to her boyfriend. Very sad. Then, as she stood looking through the gated fence we decided she was saying goodbye to her boyfriend who was now in penitentiary. Again, very sad (we never really decided why he was locked up but it was a tragic love story indeed). And she so loved up to the role that she later told me she thought her eyes were truly tearing up. I felt it man. Deep. Maggie, should you ever wish - acting awaits you. :) Anyway, later as we scrolled through the images it was fun to add commentary to the story. This is what I mean. The stories that follow the shoots. So fun.And as I edit, it’s only appropriate that her voice rings in the background from her newly released CD CHANGE. LOVE. SURRENDER. I’ve been blessed to be in Cindy’s living room while Maggie plays and her voice is beyond description. Magical is maybe nudging close to describing how amazing it is but still comes up short. Needless to say, her CD is one of the most soulful, soul cleansing, and healing sounds I’ve heard in a long time (will have songs on website later today so make sure to check that out!). I’ve played so many tunes over and over, including my absolute fav, Can’t Fight, so many times I’m afraid I’m wearing out my cd. WHICH, by the way - Maggie has graciously donated a CD to be given away during our Spring Fling Designer Showcase and Photo Event - just one of the many prizes we’ll be handing out through the day. I’ll also have a handful here available for purchase.
Okay, session coming in - into the studio I go! Have a great weekend! (ps - for some reason the blacks are coming up blotchy online…hopefully it won’t distract!)

Zombie Kill of the Day

Forewarning…this is one of those completely random posts…

This has been ringing - like repeatedly ringing - in my head since Sunday night. I thought maybe if I got it out - like wrote or said it somewhere - plagued someone else with it! :) - it’d finally leave me alone. It comes from the movie Zombieland which - so ironic for me (I’m not a fan of horror movies)- I really liked…much to my mom’s puzzlement too I might add - my poor mom who I made sit through it and watch it with me.  I don’t know - maybe it was Woody Harrelson or the dry humor or just how ludicrous it was but on Sunday night it had me laughing my bootie off. Sunday was a bit of a movie fest - my mom and I took the kids to their first ever movie experience to see the Princess and the Frog…and random side  observation/question - why can’t everyone make kid movies like Pixar? Correction - everyone should make movies like Pixar (in my humble opinionona!). Movies that are visually entertaining, have a little adult humor stashed within and keep the hum drums from overtaking you. Because let me tell you - my mom and I both agreed that sitting through the Princess and the Frog with my kids was a true act of love. Hold on - let me say that again - a. true. act. of. love.

After that small nap of a movie my mom and I indulged and took the kids to drop in daycare so we could revitalize our minds and treat ourselves to a movie. We went to see Shutter Island which - sigh - okay, I’ve been with DeCaprio since his Basketball Diaries days and I’d watch just about any movie the guy is in but this movie had very little shuttering and a whole lot of scurrying as you tried to follow the mind game plot that spun itself a little too tightly. A bit of a bummer. Maybe this is why, by 8pm that night, Zombieland was so entertaining to me.

Okay, side note about Spring Fling Designer Showcase and Photo Event below - I’ve already received several calls so don’t wait to call and book your session time! Also, since the post yesterday we’ve added a list of prizes from local small businesses that we’ll be giving away through the day in addition to the cool raffle drawing. I’m excited to dress up little people and have a blast photographing them so I hope you’ll definitely join us!

And a picture of Ms Maggie who I’m in the process of editing. This girl is packed with talent - will be bragging about her on the blog tomato!:) (yes, spelling errors are intentional - throwing in a little botched Italian accent today). :)

Off to the gym I go with little person in tow!

Bellia Mia Designs and Upcoming

And this is why I love photographing kids - soooo much personality, so little inhibition, so unexpected. Dresses below are all by Bellia Mia Designs. Several dress designs are available at the studio for sessions and we’ll be adding to this collection. I love these dresses - whimsical, chic, sweet and handmade by a local designer and her family which I really love. We have a very fun event coming up March 27th - details will be going on our website shortly but for now I’m going to attach an ad that’s getting ready to run in Kidaround this next month. You definitely do not want to miss this! Very fun opportunity to have your kids photographed in some seriously cute spring attire and just in time for Easter too! Plus, fun raffle and displays by Bellia Mia Designs and Purdy Things.

Fierce Factor

This is cool. I switched my browser to Firefox today and guess what? It spell checks everything! Facebook, Wordpress….all of it. I love it! No more googling words while I post! :)

So, this last Tuesday Kings vs. Celtics. When I think back on the game, I think: fierce. It was a really physical game and the faces that accompanied were pretty, well, fierce. So that’s my title going in….fun game to watch, as always. I’m a bit blue while writing this though having learned we lost Kevin Martin to the Rockets. I know this is the name of the game but as a fan, ya kind of get attached. He, in my mind, was the face of our team last year during rough times. He always put 100% out when I saw him play and was often, it seemed, in for the entire game. Plus, having photographed him a few times - I just think he’s a cool guy. Very laid back, funny and easy to work with. Going to miss him.

warmup is always fun because it’s more relaxed…more smiles :)

It’s soft (the ball was coming right at me) but I like the Fierce Factor.

I think the song Can’t Touch This should accompany this image. :)

Fierce Factor

Fierce Factor

Love this look of anticipation…

So, Donnie Wahlberg was in the house. And what a cool guy - he was extremely generous with fans, signing autographs, taking pictures - he made sure everyone was addressed before he left. Very cool. Anyway, I grabbed this image of Dhon getting a War Face from him on court. I think Dhon can make anyone comfortable. He had the guy for 2 seconds and had him laughing.

so fun to photograph - super generous and genuine smile. Always tossing in a bit of attitude and poses entirely his own. I hope the Rockets take good care of him. :(
