Behind the Scenes: SKD Shoot 9.08

As a little continuation of the Sacramento Kings Dance shoot, I thought I’d share some fun stuff that went on behind the scenes as well as in front. I want to note that the image below taken behind me was given courtesy Heather Vaughan of the Sacramento Kings team. The rest are all bits and pieces of the day - the last two images are some of my favorites. So, here’s the deal - it’s become tradition that whoever is on set is the last to be photographed - doing whatever they want - the sillier, the better in my opinion. I love these! They are like the final wrap to me and end the day with a smile.

Jeannie cracks me up - she’s holding my digital target that I use to set the white balance before we begin and doing it with character - I told you they were fun!

These shots are all pieces to a final product they are putting together.

And this is some of ‘Ta Crew’ - we actually should have had Rusty in here along with some other people I didn’t meet but Rusty was the guy wielding the video camera all day - awesomely nice guy - as is everyone pictured here. From top to bottom, left to right: Mane (whose name I’m probably not spelling right! have yet to confirm), Scott who I’m officially titling “Da Man,” as in, snap, pop, sizzle, can’t touch this man, Vanooch (think I got that spelling right! who has the eye for detail and was way cool, first time meeting him and absolutely loved that he was there, and Heather who I always, always have a great time working with - who, with no other way to describe it, just gets it - all of it - who can handle beyond a million things at once, with a cool head, and still pull off funny, with true humor, at the end of the day. Speaking of which, yesterday we had another wrap of another sort with some fun final crew images that I’ll be sharing shortly…

And last, but not least, Da Man. Can’t touch this.

Carrot Stew, Served Fresh Kid Style

I’m off for a shoot which will have me out most of the day but before I head out I had to share this picture taken yesterday. All summer long our little garden has trudged along with, admittedly, no knowledgeable help from me other than water, water - hopefully, not overwater- possibly overwater, water, water, oh yeah, pull weeds. Big help I am. I’ve promised it that next year I will be a more informed gardner; that yes, I will actually read that gardening book that has been sitting on my bedstand since, oh, last April (and is buried under about 5 other top priority reads with random dog-marked pages). Our only real semi-success has been the little red and yellow tomatoes I pull off great pride (totally unwarranted - obviously - but nevertheless) about twice a week. Yesterday, however, after studying the growing mound on the top of the carrot patch, I decided it was time. No, not because I knew it was time or had any real clue other than - it looked like it was time. And whether it was or not, it made for a very entertaining few hours with my kids outside as they put together their version of Carrot Stew. So, here it is for you - in all it’s glory - fresh from the garden. Served in our backyard. Enjoy.

‘08/09 Sacramento Dance Team

Years ago when I packed my bags and headed off to New York for The School of Visual Arts this is what I dreamed of doing - fashion photography! Beautiful models, gorgeous clothes, awesome makeup, limitless creativity…what isn’t there to love? As it happens, I discovered along the way that I love all forms of portrait photography but fashion/glamour photography still holds a special place in my artistic heart so this was an especially fun day. Add in the fact that all these dancers are exceptionally sweet with awesome spunk and personality - well, it was like someone handing me a $1,000 gift card to the mall and saying - “here, go have fun!” We did! Here are a few favs:

LOVE her hair cut…

Candace has eye contact down! She can work and rework it for every pose…

And I want her hair! In my wishlist for another life - Jen’s hair!

News & Dinner: Not a Cuddly Couple

I’m not sure if I should write this here but it sits at the forefront of my mind, knocking to be let out. As I write this I admit, I’m a little blue. My spouse went down sick this afternoon so while I was eating dinner by my lonely, I turned on CNN. Big - mistake. I decided, regrettably too much later, that news should really only be stomached in the morning with a cup of coffee on a short time leash with several hours left in the day to erase out any negative information overload. As it was, taken at the end of the day, it didn’t sit very well. Here’s the thought that taunts me and begs to be discussed…I know there are a lot of very, very pertinent things going on in our country that we need to be informed of but it’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine that our news glorifies so much of what is wrong in our world and so little of what is right. Yes, it’s important. I’m not in denial. But it also seems, to a point, counter-productive. How many times do we need to rehash something to get the baseline point? And how productive is it to beat the same bad news into the minds of the viewer over and over again? What purpose does it serve?  What if we spent a little more time focusing on the good things  - wouldn’t we - couldn’t we - help bring more good? Maybe it’s naive to think this way but I wonder….

Anyway! On a much, much more positive note, I wrapped up a few images I took for Marie Brown of Eco Chic Design last week and thought I’d share one. I’m always inspired after seeing Marie - inspired by all her knowledge, for her vision, her insight, and her willingness to share of herself with others. If you ever happen to be around Blue Oaks Blvd on a Saturday, stop by the Expo and you just may catch her at her booth!
